The Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging

Image Wisely

The American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America formed the Joint Task Force on Adult Radiation Protection to address concerns about the surge of public exposure to ionizing radiation from medical imaging. The Joint Task Force collaborated with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists to create the Image Wisely campaign with the objective of lowering the amount of radiation used in medically necessary imaging studies and eliminating unnecessary procedures.

CTISUS, The website enters its 14th year of providing the premier website dedicated to Computed Tomography Scanning (CT scanning). The site provides a range of content ranging from CT scan protocols for CT scanners from Siemens Medical, GE Healthcare, Phillips Medical and Toshiba Medical to a series of over 600 weekly vodcast and podcasts addressing a wide range of CT topics. The teaching file has over 175,000 state of the art images ranging from images of the kidney, to pancreas to liver and cardiac imaging to name a few. The site provide pearls or key points on a range of CT topics and between 50 and 150 new pearls are added monthly. A journal club provides summaries of the 15-30 best CT articles published that month. Additional site resources include programs dedicated to cardiac CT, virtual colonoscopy and IV contrast related issues. We also answers questions posted by our users in the Ask the Fish section of the site. Other features too numerous to mention include a medical illustration gallery and a challenging monthly quiz. The site is designed to be easy to navigate and use and provide an outstanding user experience. Whether you are listening to our lectures on YouTube or the Apple Store you will find the best in medical education on CT scanning. We hope you enjoy the site and its contents.

CTtutor strives to bring fun to learning. We have spent years developing a comprehensive e-training course to improve technologists’ skills in all subject areas of computed tomography. The curriculum was developed by our team of experienced educators and technologists. Technologists and students have extensively tested the curriculum for its effectiveness in preparing for the clinical environment and the ARRT* registry exam. is a non-commercial platform launched in 2007 for scientific knowledge exchange about the medical value of the latest innovations in computed tomography – Dual-Source CT. The website represents an international community of medical experts, especially radiologists and cardiologists dedicated to research on DSCT, and provides a global discussion forum for medical experts to talk about its potential use in patient care. The website is not addressed to consumers or patients. DSCT is a community of leading experts in DSCT. Benefit from their expertise and learn about Dual-Source CT and Dual Energy with cases, protocols, interviews, and much more.

Interactive Atlas of Cross-Sectional Anatomy   e-anatomy web site. More than 1500 slices from normal CT and MR exams were selected in order to cover the entire sectional anatomy of human body. Images were labeled using Terminologia Anatomica. A user-friendly interface allows to cine through multi-slice image series combined with interactive textual information, 3D models and anatomy drawings.

GE Healthcare -VCT Series Scan in Volumes-not Slices The LightSpeed VCT Series groundbreaking technology opens the door to new procedures while improving the imaging of existing ones. Improved resolution, reduced acquisitions per study*, shorter patient-breath-holds along with the platform’s power to routinely support faster coverage with submillimeter resolution, allow more robust and repeatable studies. This is critical in emerging procedures such as Coronary Angiographic studies. is a continually updated reference website offering scientific information to all professionals involved in or interested in multidetector computed tomography technology and practice. The website aims at keeping the radiology community updated on recent developments, at providing information that may improve standards of practice, and at promoting the worldwide dissemination of relevant guidelines and scanning protocols.

Radiation Effective Dose From CT Scans  This program uses parameterizations of data developed by Huda and colleagues (see “References” below) to compute radiation effective dose consequential to computed tomography examinations. “Effective dose”, as defined in ICRP Report Number 90, is an index (with units of millirem) that reflects radiation detriment (risk).

Shuman’s Spotlight, on Low Radiation CT, Dr. William Shuman, MD
A noted researcher in the area of cardiac and dual energy CT, William P. Shuman, MD, FACR, is Professor, Medical Director of Radiology, and Vice Chair of the Department of Radiology at University of Washington Medical Center.

The CT Anatomy Tutor, from Wayne State University, This program is designed for teaching clinically relevant CT anatomy of the entire body. This is not a comprehensive guide for learning CT anatomy. The focus of this program is on specific structures which are readily seen on CT images but often are not well described in CT atlases. It is specifically oriented to structures that have clinical relevance. There are three sections to this program. The first section is in a quiz format where structures are shown in the brain, head and neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis, and the upper and lower extremities. The second section is a series of tutorials that describe how to identify structures in regions with complex anatomy or structures that have special characteristics that can be used to identify other structures. The third section consists of a glossary of anatomic terms with links to structures identified in the first two sections.
Images in this program are primarily 2.5 to 3 mm axial sections of normal CT scans with relevant sagittal and coronal reconstructions.

The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA)
What is The Cancer Imaging Archive?
A large archive of medical images of cancer accessible for public download. Registering is free. All images are stored in DICOM file format. The images are organized as “Collections”, typically patients related by a common disease (e.g. lung cancer), image modality (MRI, CT, etc) or research focus.

UK CT Users Group We are a group for people with an interest in medical CT scanning. Our main aim is to share experience and knowledge relating to CT scanning with each other, as well as to provide an educational forum. We formed in 1999, and are mainly hospital physicists, but we also count radiographers and radiologists amongst our number. Our main forum occurs during our meetings, which are organized approximately once per year. These are informal, and involve presentations and discussion sessions, with an emphasis on sharing experience and knowledge.

X-ray Risk  This site provides information for patients and health care providers to facilitate well-informed discussions about the increased risk of cancer from radiation exposure as a result of medical imaging.
